Having a good immune system will ensure that you are able to fight off many diseases, or at best allow them to be short lived. And, guess what? You don’t have to do a lot of unusual or terribly difficult tasks to protect and improve your immune system. As a matter of fact, you can do it the natural way!
Here are eight tips to start you on your way to a healthier, happier you!
1. Improve Your Gut Microbiota, or Gut Flora
The bacteria that lives in “your gut may have the biggest impact on your well-being. They line your entire digestive system. Most live in your intestines and colon. They affect everything from your metabolism to your mood to your immune system.”
You can improve your gut health, first and foremost, by eating nutritious meals. You may want to add probiotics to your daily intake. For example, you can add yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi, to improve your gut health. The more efficiently your digestive system is working, the better your health!
2. Maintain a Healthy Adrenal Cortex.
Be sure to eat “healthy” foods that provide your body with its needed amino acids and antioxidants. For example, include avocados in your meals to help boost your adrenal glands. Feeding your body the right nutrients can help in producing those needed hormones–adrenaline, aldosterone and cortisol — and make for your well-functioning immune system.
3. Stay Well-Hydrated.
Did you know that every cell, every muscle, and every organ of your body is unable to function at it full capacity if it is not well-hydrated? Water is one of the many things in the world that your body can never get enough of! And, since your body consists of nearly 80% water, it stands to reason that you need to give your body its fill!
Just remember the 8×8 rule: Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily!
4. Add Cruciferous Vegetables to Your Meal Plan.
You can boost your immune system by helping your liver. Prepare your meals using some of these vegetables: kale, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, bok choy, and collard greens. They will help to detoxify your liver so that it can function as it was meant to!
5. Be sure to Get Your Required Amount of Sleep.
According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), “Sleep plays an important role in your physical health. For example, sleep is involved in healing and repair of your heart and blood vessels. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke.”
If you are 18 years of age or older, you should get between 7-9 hours daily. Getting a good night sleep actually will create a happier, healthier you.
6. Add a Daily Exercise Regimen.
Even if you are turned off by the idea of adding exercise to your everyday routine, there are many ways that you can get active. For example, if you are simply able to take in a short fifteen- or twenty-minute walk every day, you can boost your immune system. Just the act of walking, inhaling and exhaling will help to improve your overall health and well-being.
7. Avoid Toxins.
If you are a smoker, quit smoking. You should not drink alcohol in excess. If possible, avoid taking prescription drugs. And it goes without saying that the fewer toxins you put into your body, the healthier and heartier you will become.
8. Take in Fresh Air and Sunshine.
Every day, you should discover ways to get in fresh air and sunshine. According to Rebecca Taylor, there are several benefits of getting fresh air: It helps your digestive system, cleans your lungs, improves your blood pressure, and heart rate, immune system.
And the sunshine will give your body the nutrients that it needs. In The Benefits of Sunshine and Fresh Air, the author notes that “[s]unlight confers a rich array of natural health benefits, stimulating the production of a number of hormones essential for a healthy body and mind. It isn’t just plants that metabolize sunlight: we do too, via a complex bio-chemical process that converts sunlight into Vitamin D…. Vitamin D is known to be good for our circulatory and nervous systems.”
